Video on demand – DW Media Center

Deutsche Welle Media Center

You missed your favorite show on DW television, for example the latest edition of Shift – Living in the Digital Age? No problem. The Deutsche Welle Media Center provides all editions of the modern show online, accessible at any time from anywhere.

Like Shift, most of the content being broadcasted on Deutsche Welle goes directly into the Media Center. Vast amounts of video and audio material but also photo series are almost automatically stored and available here. In contrast to other media libraries from public broadcasters such as ARD or ZDF, the German foreign broadcaster is not obliged to take out the material after seven days. Furthermore the videos and audios are not restricted to certain regions, which sometimes occurs on YouTube or the BBC iPlayer, but can be viewed worldwide.

The idea to create the Media Center goes back several years but it was finally developed and launched in 2011. It originally started with English and German content and now also offers Arabic and Spanish material with topics ranging from news to economy and culture/ lifestyle to sports. Besides the conserved content, the Media Centers offers four television live streams covering America, Europe, Arabia and Asia and additionally for people interested in learning German it offers a special and successful multimedia learning program, where users can listen and read the item at the same time.

Berlin-Vacationing with a tourist from Britain – Directly embedded from DW Media Center

Offering content on demand has been a special matter of concern for Deutsche Welle. From the early stages on items were made available via Podcast and later on also via Vodcast (Video Podcast). With podcasts users can watch shows whenever and wherever they want, even without having a permanent connection to the internet. The Media Center now complements this service and offers additional functionalities like related content and provides various options for social interaction. User can, for example, share content with friends or – whenever possible – embed video content in their own blog.

The technical platform of the Media Center is designed to suit a broad range of devices such as desktop browsing, tablets and mobile browsing. To enable an optimal user experience which adapts the layout to the viewing environment (“responsive design”), state of the art technologies using HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript were applied.

The work on the Media Center never ends. Next on the agenda will be the language extension to Persian and Russian as well as the implementation of new features such as a playlist, where users can create a set of media items to be played in a sequential order.

We asked Björn Rosenthal, who is the Product Manager of the Media Center what new feature he would like to develop soon: Currently users can search the data and explore it by related content. A great additional service to offer would be a topical approach to the content, for example specials to major events such as the Arabic spring or the fall of the Berlin Wall.

If you have ideas or suggestions how to improve the Media Center or want to learn more about it contact the Media Center. The DW Media Center is seamlessy integrated into the overall website of Deutsche Welle and can be directly reached under http://mediacenter.dw.de/english .
